Né à Laren (Pays Bas) le 22 octobre 1946.

Baccalauréat sciences expérimentales (Dijon, France) en 1966. Spécialiste en biologie marine, Doctorat d’État à l’Université d’Amsterdam, 1979. Écrivain et photographe, spécialiste du monde sous-marin et du voyage. Auteur de plus de 30 livres et environ 600 articles de revue.

Bachelor’s degree in experimental sciences (Dijon, France) in 1966. Specialist in marine biology, PhD at the University of Amsterdam, 1979. Writer and photographer, specialist in the underwater world and travel. Author of over 30 books and about 600 mazine articles.

À l’age de 15 ans, j’enfourchais mon vélomoteur Peugeot “Griffon” de 49 cm³ pour rallier en solitaire le Midi de la France, où j’habitais, à la Hollande, où mon frère faisait ses études. 1500 km en trois jours, les fesses en feu et le sentiment que le monde m’appartenait.

When I was 15, I was riding my Peugeot « Griffon » moped of 49 cm³ to travel solo from the South of France, where I lived, to Holland, where my brother was studying. 1500 km in three days, my buttocks on fire and the feeling that the world belonged to me.

 

À 17 ans, avec mon ami Jaap van Poelgeest, chacun sur notre scooter, nous avons fait un Monaco-Athènes-Monaco, traversant la Yougoslavie sur des routes pour la plupart caillouteuses. Nous ne comptions plus les crevaisons et le moteur de ma Vespa 125 cm³ a dû être démonté à maintes reprises. Nous dormions sous la tente ou à la belle étoile. Nous mangions du pain et de la confiture, des oeufs achetés au marché et du maïs piqué dans les champs. Je prenais goût à l’aventure.

At 17, with my friend Jaap van Poelgeest, each on our scooter, we traveled from Monaco to Athens ands back, crossing Yugoslavia mostly on pebble roads. We did not count the numerous punctures and the engine of my Vespa 125 cm³ had to be disassembled time and time again. We slept in tents or under the stars. We ate bread and jam, market-bought eggs and corn stolen in the fields. I took a liking to adventure.

Depuis, j’ai visité les quatre coins du globe et surtout tous les recoins des océans, pour la recherche sous-marine d’abord (de 1971 à 1984), puis à la recherche de créatures marines pour mes guides sous-marins et mes articles sur le monde subaquatique. De 1982 à 2010, j’étais professeur de biologie à l’École Européenne de Luxembourg.

Since then, I have travelled around the globe and especially all the corners of the oceans, first for underwater research (from 1971 to 1984), then in search of marine creatures for my underwater guides and my articles on the underwater world. From 1982 to 2010, I was a biology teacher at the European School of Luxembourg.

Mais à partir de mes soixante ans, j’avais besoin de m’offrir des rêves de gamin. Le résultat ? Un Paris-Gobi de 16.000 km avec ma vieille Renault 4CV de 1959 en 2007-2008, un Tour du Monde de 33.500 km avec la même «Petite» en 2010-2011, un tour des mini-États d’Europe en «Mini» en 2014-2015. Et ce n’est pas fini. En 2016, pour mes 70 ans, je me suis offert un Tour de France avec «La Petite», en compagnie de ma femme, Marie-Xavier. Quant à 2020… affaire à suivre !

Le but étant plutôt de partir que d’arriver. Tracer une ligne rouge sur la carte, incertaine, mais pleine de surprises et de belles rencontres humaines.

But past sixty, I needed to live my childhood dreams. The result ? A Paris-Gobi of 16,000 km with my old Renault 4CV of 1959 in 2007-2008, a World Tour of 33,500 km with the same « Little One » in 2010-2011, a tour of the mini-states of Europe in a « Mini » in 2014-2015. And that was not all. In 2016, for my 70th birthday, I went for a Tour de France with « La  Petite », in the company of my wife, Marie-Xavier. As for 2020 … keep coming back to this website!

The goal being rather to leave than to arrive. To trace a red line on the map, an uncertain and wavering one, but full of surprises and beautiful human encounters.

I have nothing to prove except one thing: that I am alive! «
