L’Aventure Peugeot / Peugeot Adventure
Grâce à Jérôme Lémal – l’homme par qui tout a commencé – je me trouve en face de Xavier Crespin, le directeur de « L’Aventure Peugeot », dans locaux de PSA à Poissy, le 18 juin 2019. Xavier, enchanté par le projet et très enthousiaste,me propose un partenariat pour préparer « La Charmante » au voyage et la promotion avec la Marque PSA au moment du lancement de la 208. En plus, nous fait-il remarquer, Peugeot fêtera ses 201 ans en 2020 !
Thanks to Jérôme Lémal – the man who started it all – I am facing Xavier Crespin, the director of « L’Aventure Peugeot », across a conference table at the PSA premises in Poissy, on June 18, 2019. Xavier, delighted by the project and very enthusiastic, offers me a partnership to prepare « La Charmante » for the trip and the promotion with the PSA Brand when they will launch their model 208. In addition, he points out, Peugeot will celebrate its 201 years of existence in 2020!
Xavier me promet d’en parler à son équipe en fin de semaine pour définir exactement les clauses du partenariat à venir. Je suis sur un petit nuage : ce que Renault n’avait jamais voulu faire pour mon tour du monde avec « La Petite », Peugeot va le faire pour le tour d’Europe avec « La Charmante » !
Xavier promises to talk to his team at the end of the week to define the exact terms of our upcoming partnership. It is like a dream: what Renault never wanted to do for my world tour with « La Petite », Peugeot will do it for the tour of Europe with « La Charmante »!
Suivent des semaines de silence radio… Je relance plusieurs fois. Finalement, j’obtiens le feu vert pour emmener « La Charmante » dans les ateliers de l’Aventure Peugeot à Sochaux. Je fais le trajet Senningen-Sochaux – 360 km – par la route, et dépose la voiture le lundi 19 août 2019. On a perdu deux mois depuis la réunion à Poissy, mais bon, elle est enfin aux mains des experts de Peugeot. Je suis confiant !
Weeks of silence follow… I send several e-mails. Finally, I get the green light to take « La Charmante » to the Peugeot Adventure workshops in Sochaux. I make the trip Senningen-Sochaux – 360 km – by road, and drop the car there on Monday August 19, 2019. We’ve lost two months since the meeting in Poissy, but no worry, she is finally in the hands of Peugeot experts. I’m confident !
Suivent encore des semaines de silence. Le 9 octobre 2019 – je suis alors à New York pour un autre projet de livre – téléconférence entre Xavier Crespin (Directeur de l’Aventure Peugeot), Hervé Charpentier (Directeur en charge des contenus documentaires), Christian Guillaume (Responsable technique), Jérôme Lémal (mon “officier de liaison”) et moi. En résumé, le message qu’ils me font passer m’anéantit : ils ne feront RIEN, la révision « leur coûterait trop cher (leur estimation : 26.000 € !) et leur prendrait trop de temps. » PSA n’est pas intéressé non plus. Après m’avoir fait miroiter monts et merveilles, ils me font simplement tomber. C’est incompréhensible. Me voilà à nouveau seul devant la tâche…
More weeks of silence. On October 9, 2019 – I’m in New York for another book project – teleconference between Xavier Crespin (Director of Peugeot Adventure), Hervé Charpentier (Director in charge of documentary content), Christian Guillaume (Technical manager), Jérôme Lemal (my “liaison officer”) and me. In summary, their message is devastating: they will do NOTHING, the revision « would cost them too much (their estimate: 26,000 €!) and would take them too long. PSA is not interested either. After promising me the rainbow, they just abandon me. It’s incomprehensible. Here I am again alone in front of the task…
Je ne suis pas du genre à me décourager vite, mais là, j’avoue que le coup est dur ! Le pire, ce n’est même pas qu’ils me laissent tomber financièrement. Le pire, c’est qu’ils m’ont fait perdre QUATRE mois !!! J’aurais vraiment préféré entendre leur refus dès le mois de juin !
I’m not a person to be discouraged quickly, but here I must admit that the blow is hard! The worst part is not even that they let me down financially. The worst part is that they made me lose FOUR months !!! I would really have preferred to hear their refusal as early as June!
Début novembre, je me rends à nouveau à Sochaux, je récupère « La Charmante », et je refais le chemin de retour vers la maison, à nouveau 360 km par les petites routes de campagne.
At the beginning of November, I go again to Sochaux, I recover « La Charmante », and I make the way back to the house, again 360 km by small country roads.
