En arrivant sur le bateau, hier, j’ai offert à Christopher (3 ans), un petit livre dans lequel je lui ferai un dessin par jour. Ça tombe bien, le gamin apprend déjà l’alphabet. Je lui ai dessiné un Serpent pour apprendre le S. Ça marche également en anglais (Snake) et en néerlandais (Slang). Et c’est valable pour Steven aussi ! Une fois dessiné, c’est Christopher qui se charge du coloriage. / When I arrived on the boat yesterday, I gave Christopher (3 years old) a little book in which I will draw him a picture a day. That’s good, the kid is already learning the alphabet. I drew him a Slang (in Dutch) to learn the S. It also works in English (Snake) and French (Serpent). And it’s valid for Steven too! Once drawn, Christopher is in charge of coloring.
Après le petit-déjeuner, première excursion à terre. Nous passons devant une petite église au nom de Teiupiti o te rima merieraga. Premier signe de l’implantation solide du catholicisme dans l’archipel. / After breakfast, first excursion ashore. We pass in front of a small church named Teiupiti o te rima merieraga. First sign of the solid establishment of Catholicism in the archipelago.
Mais le véritable but de notre promenade est la Cathédrale Saint-Michel. Deux ans après l’arrivée des premiers missionnaires aux Gambier, les Pères Honoré Laval et François Caret, appartenant à la congrégation de Picpus, le roi Maputeoa a consenti à démanteler le marae Te Keika, qui était le plus grand sanctuaire de son genre à Rikitea. À sa place, la cathédrale Saint-Michel de Rikitea a été construite, qui est devenue la plus grande église des îles du Pacifique Sud, construite entre 1836 et 1862 sous la direction des frères Gilbert Soulié et Fabien Costes. L’arrivée du catholicisme dans l’archipel gomma ainsi la culture millénaire locale. / But the real goal of our walk is St. Michael’s Cathedral. Two years after the arrival of the first missionaries in the Gambier Islands, Fathers Honoré Laval and François Caret, belonging to the Picpus congregation, King Maputeoa agreed to dismantle the Te Keika marae, which was the largest sanctuary of its kind in Rikitea. In its place, St. Michael’s Cathedral of Rikitea was built, which became the largest church in the South Pacific Islands, built between 1836 and 1862 under the direction of Brothers Gilbert Soulié and Fabien Costes. The arrival of Catholicism in the archipelago thus erased the local age-old culture.

À proximité, au beau milieu de la cour de récréation de l’école primaire de Rikitea, se trouve la tour du roi Maputeoa, construite en 1848. Elle abritait autrefois des armes et des barils de poudre servant à alimenter le canon situé sur l’îlot d’en face, qui retentissait lors des grands évènements. / Nearby, in the middle of the playground of Rikitea Primary School, is King Maputeoa’s Tower, built in 1848. It once housed weapons and barrels of gunpowder used to fuel the cannon on the small island opposite, which rang out during major events.
Dans l’après-midi, nouvelle promenade, en sueur, vers La crypte de Maputeoa (1814-1857), située dans la chapelle Saint-Pierre, dans les hauteurs de la ville de Rikitea. / In the afternoon, another sweaty walk to the Maputeoa Crypt (1814-1857), located in the Saint-Pierre chapel, in the heights of the town of Rikitea.
Au niveau du col de la route menant vers la côte nord-ouest de l’ile de Mangareva, belle vue sur l’île d’Aukena. / At the pass of the road leading to the northwest coast of the island of Mangareva, beautiful view of the island of Aukena.
Nous avons la chance d’assister au lâcher quotidien du ballon de Météo France, transportant plusieurs sondes. Teva, le météorologue de service, nous explique que l’hydrogène nécessaire est produit sur place. / We are lucky enough to witness the daily release of the Météo France balloon, carrying several probes. Teva, the meteorologist on duty, explains to us that the necessary hydrogen is produced on site.
Jurriaan et Christopher ont le privilège de pouvoir relâcher le ballon, qui montera jusqu’à une altitude d’environ 30 000 mètres avant d’exploser. / Jurriaan and Christopher have the privilege of being allowed to release the balloon, which will rise to an altitude of around 30,000 metres before exploding.
Nous suivons son ascension fulgurante et les divers paramètres en direct sur l’ordinateur de la station. / We follow its fast ascent and the various parameters live on the station’s computer.
Nous redescendons à Rikitea, passant par le portail qui mena jadis au couvent. / We go back down to Rikitea, passing through the gate that once led to the convent.
D’autres constructions, contemporaines, sont plus modestes… / Other, contemporary constructions are more modest…

Pas évident de s’improviser reporter… Le 8 février dernier, j’avais envoyé le mail suivant au maire de la ville de Rikitea, et de ce fait de toutes les îles de l’archipel : / Not easy to become a reporter… On February 8, I sent the following email to the mayor of the town of Rikitea, and therefore of all the islands in the archipelago:
Monsieur le Maire,
Le journal « Ouest France » – le plus grand quotidien français – m’a demandé de faire quelques articles sur l’archipel des Gambier. J’arriverai à Totegegle le 4 mars prochain et je resterai 3 semaines. Je serai accueilli à bord du voilier « Songster », capitaine M. Jurriaan KLOEK, actuellement déjà présent dans l’archipel.
Dans le cadre de mon reportage, j’aimerais bien vous rencontrer. J’espère également que vous pourrez me mettre en rapport avec des personnes pouvant me raconter l’histoire de l’archipel, sa vie actuelle (économique, culturelle, religieuse), des propriétaires de fermes perlières, et tout ce qui vous semble d’importance pour raconter les Gambier.
Auriez-vous l’amabilité de me fixer un rendez-vous à partir du 6 mars (le temps que je récupère du décalage horaire) ?

Dear Mayor,
The newspaper « Ouest France » – the largest French daily – has asked me to write some articles on the Gambier Islands. I will arrive in Totegegle on March 4th and will stay for 3 weeks. I will stay aboard the sailing ship « Songster », captain Mr. Jurriaan KLOEK, who is currently already present in the archipelago.
As part of my report, I would like to meet you. I also hope that you can put me in touch with people who can tell me about the history of the archipelago, its current life (economic, cultural, religious), pearl farm owners, and anything else that seems important to you to tell the story of the Gambier Islands.
Would you be so kind to set up an appointment with me as of March 6th (the time it takes me to recover from the jet lag)?

Accompagné par Camila et Jurriaan, nous donc voici, pile à l’heure, pour rencontrer Monsieur le Maire, Vai Vianello GOODING. Qui nous fait poireauter trois-quarts d’heure avant que l’on soit enfin admis dans son bureau. Réunion expéditive, Monsieur le Maire ne semble pas très intéressé, et du bout des lèvres nous donne deux numéros de téléphone, l’un d’un perliculteur, l’autre d’un vieux monsieur, qui serait la mémoire de l’île… On verra, mais on sort quand même un peu désappointé de ce premier contact. / Accompanied by Camila and Jurriaan, here we are, right on time, to meet the Mayor, Vai Vianello GOODING. Who lets us wait for three-quarters of an hour before we are finally admitted to his office. A hasty meeting, the Mayor does not seem very interested, and reluctantly gives us two telephone numbers, one of a pearl farmer, the other of an old gentleman, who is supposedly the memory of the island… We will see, but we still come away a little disappointed from this first contact.
En fin d’après-midi, petite séance de snorkeling. Premier essai de photos avec mon iPhone dans un boîtier ultrasimple. Beaucoup d’holothuries et de coraux-champignons. / Late afternoon, a short snorkeling session. First attempt at photos with my iPhone in an ultra-simple case. Lots of sea cucumbers and mushroom corals.
Mais pas mal de coraux blanchis aussi, probablement voués à mourir sous peu. Nous sommes dans une baie peu profonde qui chauffe facilement. Espérons qu’ailleurs dans le lagon les coraux seront plus sains… / But quite a few bleached corals too, probably doomed to die soon. We are in a shallow bay that heats up easily. Let’s hope that elsewhere in the lagoon the corals will be healthier…
